Welcome

Absolute Alpacas is located in sunny Southern California, just minutes north of Palm Springs in the small community of Morongo Valley. Although the temperatures can reach the triple digits during the summer months, we are fortunately blessed with rather mild climates for the rest of the year. We started our ranch in early 2003 and have been very satisfied with our decision to invest in alpacas. It has been a constant learning experience and we have enjoyed every minute of it. There is always much hard work to be done, but that is overshadowed by the love and admiration we feel for these magnificent animals.
Visitors are welcome anytime, but please call first to let us know you are coming. We love to talk alpacas and enjoy good company.

Alpacas are indigenous to South America, where they roam the Andes Mountains in Peru, Chile, and Bolivia. There are two kinds of alpacas, huacaya (wa-ky-a), and suri. Huacaya alpacas have more of a “teddy bear” appearance with an abundance of crimpy soft fiber that is shorn once a year. Suri alpacas have twisting pencil-like locks that hang down in a more “dread lock” appearance. Alpacas are shorn once a year for their luxurious fiber. This fiber is used all over the world to create high end fashion garments. The United States alpaca population is not large enough currently to sustain a garment industry. We have a national organization, AOBA, who spends much time and effort marketing, to assure a viable future industry. At present, there are many different options for selling your fiber crop. Despite what you may think, alpacas for the most part, are NOT huggable. They much prefer the company of other alpacas to us humans! They have strong herding instincts. When purchasing alpacas, you must always have at least two alpacas. Alpacas would not thrive or do well kept without the company of at least one other alpaca. Baby alpacas are called crias (cree-ah). The word cria simply means a baby animal. Alpacas have a gestation period of 11.5 months and have single births. Although alpacas sometimes become pregnant with twins, they usually abort, or one fetus is absorbed long before they come to term. Alpacas eat primarily pasture or hay, a free feed mineral, and sometimes the addition of a supplement crumble depending on their specific growth or lactation needs and the quality of your pasture or hay. It is very important that your alpaca always has access to clean fresh water. Many large animal veterinarians have never worked with alpacas before, so make sure you find one in your area who is willing to learn, BEFORE, you bring your new alpacas home.
